TN govt files counter affidavit, doing things by Centre\'s rules

DMK veteran Dr M Karunanidhi passed away at the Kauvery Hospital on August 7 at 6.10 pm following a decline in his health. The five-time former CM was admitted to the hospital on July 26 following a fever due to urinary tract infection.

Earlier on Tuesday, MK Stalin had requested CM Edappadi Palaniswami space for burial next to CN Annadurai's memorial at the Marina Beach. However, his request was dismissed by the TN govt citing legal issues.

Irked at not being allotted place in Marina, DMK moved the court and requested for the hearing to take place on a high-priority basis. However, the case was adjourned and the hearing was scheduled at 8.30 am on Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, TN govt filed its counter affidavit in the matter and stated that space has been allotted in Gandhi Mandapam and that the reason for not giving space in Marina is because of the central government's rules.

The Madras HC further dismissed petitions filed by Traffic Ramaswamy, Pattali Makkal Katchi's K Balu and Dravidar Kazhagam's Doraisamy. The three had filed petitions last year challenging the building of memorials in Marina. The HC dismissed a total of five petitions so far.

Madras HC's verdict is being awaited. Follow this space for more updates.
