Thagaraaru is a film directed by debutant Ganesh Vinaayac starring Arulnidhi and Poorna. The film has music by Dharan Kumar and is produced by Cloud Nine Movies Dhayanidhi Alagiri.

Anna Nadai
Singers: Chinna Ponnu, Velmurugan
Lyrics: Aegaadhesi

Fast paced folk basher that plays out almost exactly as you expect it to, including the dynamism of the vocal performances. All the innovation that Dharan could infuse to the tune comes early on with the screeching pipe instrumentals. It’s business as usual for the singers.

Nanba Nanba
Singers: Ananthu
Lyrics: Karunakaran

Next up is a tune that is surprisingly engaging even if it’s templated in concept. But Dharan makes the most of the 5 and odd minutes to get creative with the orchestration dropping in flute solos, piano notes to pair with the pulsating rhythm section. The gradual build up of the crescendo is quite brilliantly devised and ably executed by the singer Ananthu. If anything, the sheer persistence of a talented composer to showcase his skills and mettle has led to an impressive result.

Super Thirudan
Singers: Haricharan
Lyrics: Ganesh Vinayaac

This track seems to pick up from the fag end of the Poda Podi closer in terms of energy, vigor and sound. The tempo is infectiously high and leaves you with little regard for the actual melody when the beats are inescapable. It’s a parade of percussions behind Haricharan’s powerhouse performance but you can’t help but wish that the chorus hook was a little more fresh, atleast lyrically, to take this song to a higher level.

Thagararu (Theme)
Singers: Instrumental
Lyrics:

A mildly ferocious opening may seem suitable for the track title but then there are sudden flashes of gentle textures which give the track an unexpected personality that’s admirable.

Thiruttu Paya Pulla
Singers: Karthik
Lyrics: Ganesh Vinayaac

Again credit to Dharan to dish out a folk tune with a refreshing essence while working with simple melodies. The composer embellishes the tune colorfully with his bright instrumentation and backed by the always-enjoyable Karthik. The core elements of the song are very much served on the surface but there’s plenty of action in the background that can keep the listener interested and even excited.

Verdict: Dharan continues to show promise with an album that has some impressive highlights.
