Chennai: Woman called in for questioning immolates self, dies

A 30-year-old woman self-immolated in front of the Thiruverkadu police station on Tuesday. G Revathi was called in for questioning as she and her neighbour Amirthavalli had frequent quarrels over petty issues.

While Revathi made it to the police station, Amirthavalli didn't. While Amirthavalli was being called in for questioning, the inspector-in-charge had asked Revathi to go for lunch and be back.

However, Revathi returned in an hour or so, doused herself with a can of petrol and set herself on fire. Police personnel rescued her and admitted her to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, where she succumbed to her burn injuries, which was 82 per cent.

On Wednesday, Chennai City Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan transferred two police officials in relation to the incident.
