Q: How do you react to the success of Anniyan?

Vikram: Anniyan was a very challenging assignment. It took all of two years and I did not do any other film merely because of the grand sweep of the story. Now the success of the film is very satisfying because all the hard work has borne out.

Q: You have a flair for donning different roles. Now you are doing Maja which is a total fun affair.

Vikram: In Kasi, Pithamagan and Anniyan, I tried to work up a different screen persona each time. I have also done purely entertaining fare like

Dhool, Gemini and Sami. After the draining stint in Anniyan, I wanted to do a relaxing film. I watched Thommanum makkalum in Malayalam and instinctively knew that the film would work in Tamil also. I called up Shafi and requested him to direct the Tamil version. He has retained the freshness and infused as many innovations as possible within the commercial matrix.

Q: Why do you have a soft corner for remakes?

Vikram: I believe that cinema speaks a universal language. As long as the story appeals to the audience, the origin is immaterial. There have been several Tamil films which were made into superhits in Telugu and Hindi. Therefore, I seek films which have interesting storylines and bring it to the Tamil audience.

Q: Would you not work in Telugu, Hindi or other languages?

Vikram: As of now, I am focused only on Tamil. But my good friends have offered me a chance in one Telugu film which I will be doing shortly. As for other languages, I do not have the time at present.

Q: Do you feel insecure with the young stars around?

Vikram: See, cinema is a creative medium and each person’s talent finds its own followers. Why should there be an artificial race? We are all here to entertain the audience. Where is the jealousy or ego? There is no need for such barriers.
