When you are in trouble, when you are sad and when you are in love - it is a given that it is our friends, who step out in front and give us a helping hand. If you think Kappal is one of those sweet friendship melodies, it is definitely not and if you think otherwise, it definitely is.

The movie is about the extra sweetness of friendship that can attract those irking red ants. Vaibhav and his immature friends played by Karunakaran, Arjunan, Venkat Sundar and Karthik Priyadarshan are all over the movie throwing in comic lines causing the audience to throw out laughter.

Vaibhav, who plays the role of the male protagonist, performs well with his cartoonic nuances expressing his helplessness and subtle acting in the serious portions.

Sonam Bajwa, the female lead looks elegant and charming and her beautiful costumes suit her perfectly. She scores well in the tiny romance scenes and shares a good onscreen chemistry with Vaibhav.

VTV Ganesh hits the screen again with the character of a ‘half’ gentleman, who helps a desperate lover boy.

Comedy has turned out to be a beaming positive in the movie although people might get the feeling that it is being overdone at some places. The literal portrayal of dialogues like ‘vaayila microscope’ and ‘naan valandhitten avanga valarala” add to the laughter elements of the movie. The director, Karthik G Krish has made sure that he has packed his story with back to back comedy scenes making you overlook small logical errors like ‘the theater being half empty despite the movie being housefull according to the script”.

Vaibhav’s friends’ childish ideas to stop the marriage and to keep Vaibhav away from meeting his girlfriend are interesting and keeps you engrossed.

Dinesh Krishnan’s cinematography is right on the money, bringing in richness in the frame within the limited locations. The songs have been well shot - the concept and execution of the Kadhal Cassata song makes the entire song look yummy.

The “Ketta Vartha” fight deserves a special mention, the graphics and the editing of the sequence enhancing the concept.

Produced by I Studios Entertainment and distributed into theaters by Shankar’s S Pictures, Kappal is an attempted laugh riot that might just work for the majority.

Verdict: Good comedy helps Kappal sail safely.
