VV tussle at its peak; Narayanan to sue Oscar Ravichandran!!
‘When it rains, it pours’; this old saying seems to be coming true in the case of the recently released Vettaiyadu Vilaiyaadu. The entire film seems to have been a jinxed project right from the beginning. We need not tell you about all the problems that the film faced before finally getting to the theatres.
Vettaiyadu Vilaiyaadu

Just when one thought that all the controversies surrounding the film were over and that the film was going to have a good run at the box office a new problem has surfaced. It is a clash between two big production houses of the industry. Seventh Channel versus Oscar films. Now one must be thinking where Oscar Films came into the picture from nowhere. Those who have watched the movie at theatres in Chennai may know why. All posters of the movie in Chennai carry the logo of Oscar films.

Most of us have been thinking that it is Oscar Films that is doing the distribution of the movie. But Seventh Channel is strongly refuting this claim.
It is Seventh Channel that is doing the distribution of the movie throughout Tamil Nadu. But they have sold the rights of the movie within Chennai city, north Arcot, South Arcot and Kancheepuram to a company named Grand Alliance. Then how did Oscar films start distributing the movie? How did they issue posters and advertisements projecting themselves as the distributors of the movie? The talk in the industry is that the rights for the movie were bought by Oscar Films from Grand Alliance.

Now, it might seem that Oscar Films are fully justified in adding their logo to the posters of the movie. But, Seventh Channel does not think so. They are of the opinion that the rights for any copyright material should be bought directly from the holder of the copyright and not indirectly. The purchase that Oscar films made from Grand Alliance does not entitle them to add their logo to the movie publicity. This, it seems is the legal side of things that Oscar films has overlooked.

Seventh Channel Manickam Narayanan has demanded immediate correction of this wrong practice. He has asked Oscar films to remove their logos from all posters of the movie without any delay and in effect dissociate themselves from the movie. He has also demanded that the management of Oscar films make a public apology for what they have done within 48 hours failing which Seventh Channel will go ahead and file civil and/or criminal cases against Oscar films.
This now seems to have become a personal battle between the heads of the two production firms. A battle for supremacy between Manickam Narayanan and Oscar Ravichandran. They will be testing their powers to see who is the stronger of the two.
Though the legal side seems to favour Seventh Channel, nothing can be said for the next few days. A clear picture may emerge by that time. If Oscar Ravichandran lets his ego rest and makes the demanded apology, then the matter will be closed for good. But if he holds on to his current stand of being distributor of the movie then we have a real battle at hand. Meanwhile Manickam Narayanan has already filed a complaint against Oscar films at the Producers’ Association.

He has also reportedly said that in case of a legal tussle he would file a lawsuit claiming damages to the tune of 3 crores against Oscar Films. Now, will that scare Oscar films into disowning VV and making the apology, one has to wait and watch. Oscar films cannot afford to get into any trouble now because it is currently producing the big budget Dasavatharam and needs all the money that it has got to complete the movie. Also any legal issues could invoke a stay on the movies works, which will be a big blow to Oscar movies.
Still, Ravichandran may be game for a battle. Let’s watch the episode unfold. For now the only thing that one can say is that V.V seems to have been jinxed right from the beginning. Hope that such instances do not occur in Tamil cinema again.
