89 year old man aspires to complete PhD

Yes, learning has no age limits. The notion fits perfectly for this man from Karnataka's Koppal district, who aims to complete his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at the age of 89.

Sharanabasavaraj Bisarahalli is a freedom fighter and an inspiration to all those who decided to leave their education incomplete, due to circumstances. Bisarahalli wishes to complete his PhD from Hampi University in Kannada Sahitya. Recently, he also appeared for the entrance exam for the same.

"I had attempted the exam last year as well, but I failed. This time it went well and I am confident of clearing the exam," he said. At the age of 89, this freedom fighter, retired school teacher, and social worker is probably the oldest candidate to have appeared for the PhD entrance exam.

Bisarahalli holds a degree in law and a master's degree from Karnataka University in Dharwad and Hampi Kannada University. However, his insatiable quest for knowledge keeps him searching for more.

"With all humility, I have considered that the entire purpose of my life is to be a student and earn knowledge. And, irrespective of one’s age, the learning must never stop," Bisarahalli said

On being asked why he was unable to study at an early age, Bisarahalli told media that he had a lot of "personal commitments and PhD requires dedicated focus." If he's able to crack the entrance test, Bisarahalli hopes to find a guide to help him pursue his studies in 'Vachana Sahitya', a form of rhythmic writing in Kannada.
