SC slams Kerala\'s Sabarimala for denying women entry in shrine

The Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed Kerala's Sabarimala for denying women entry inside the shrine. It said that its action was against the constitutional mandate.

The bench of judges constituted of Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra, Justices Rohinton Fali Nariman, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra. The CJI reportedly observed, "On what basis you (temple authorities) deny the entry. It is against the Constitutional mandate. Once you open it for public, anybody can go."

The 800-year-old practice was challenged by the Indian Young Lawyers Association. Counsel Ravi Prakash Gupta appearing for IYPL said, "Mere sight of a woman does not affect anybody’s celibacy if one has taken oath of it, otherwise such oath has no meaning.”
