"EVEN TODAY, 60 KILOMETRES OF COOUM IS BEING USED FOR.." - DR. ANBUMANI RAMADOSS

The conclave saw Indian politician, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, address the crowd and talk to them about how vital it is to keep our city and rivers clean. Dr. Anbumani said:

"Chennai has 3 main rivers of which Cooum is one of the main resources. It starts from Thiruvallur district from a village called Cooum and flows down till Napier bridge cover 72 Kilometres of area. Adyar river is also vast. There is actually no city as rich as Chennai in terms of its river water. However, it has to be noted that these rivers are being wasted by us today.

This also includes Pallikarani’s marsh and the flora and fauna that it could offer. We have polluted our rivers and water bodies and have almost brought an end to it. This has led to the floods which will adversely affect a lot of people living near the water bodies. Lots of areas are built on water bodies today and it is a very bad thing that we have done today. This applies even to the Madurai brand of the Chennai High Court. 30-40 years backCooum’s water was so clean. We have to work towards bringing back our rivers. Can it be done? It can. Have they done it? No. We have to note this one point. Of the 72Kms of Cooum, 60 Kms of it is still being used for agriculture. Our aim should be to purify the portion that enters the city and keep it clean for our betterment.”
