Don’t be surprised if you run into Asin
in some shopping malls in Chennai. Unlike other
actresses, she doesn’t go into public place
in purdha or some face-covering outfit. She walks
boldly into complexes without anybody identifying
her and crying out in surprise. They cry out only
when they recognize her. Asin goes without make
up. And without make up, she is not the Asin you
see on screen. She looks like the girl next door
with her plain and pock-marked face and it is
difficult to make her out in a crowd. She commutes
by auto rickshaws without the drivers recognizing
her and she walks the main roads like one of the
common folks. If at all she gets a comment after
being recognized it is this: “God, is this
