Kollywood actors to the rescue of producers
By Behindwoods News Bureau.
April 10, 2007
To bring down the production cost, Tamil film actors have agreed to shoulder their caravan expenses. This will be deducted from their remuneration which will be paid to them from the producer's side. Complaints have been raised time and again about the problems faced
caravan
by the producers owing to the lofty sums that are being demanded by the actors of Tamil film industry. Producer's council which was convened a few days back had discussed various measures to curb down unnecessary expenditure and the salaries of actors. The council had arrived at a decision to discontinue the caravan facilities which are being extended to leading stars at shooting spots. These caravans are self contained vans which have a make-up room, a resting room and bathroom. They cost around Rs 5000/- a day.

When a hero shoots for a film for 60 days, the caravan cost alone would be a staggering 3 lakhs. When the shooting duration gets extended, these expenses also shoot up automatically. These days, caravans are being used by heroes, heroines, villains and comedians. Hence the producer council had written to Nadigar Sangam suggesting the discontinuance of caravans for actors.

Reacting to this suggestion, the actor's fraternity has informed that producers can deduce the amount for caravan while paying their salary. This amounts to a reduction of 3-8 lakhs approximately per star.

While talking about this Rama Narayanan, President of producers' council says, "We have been wanting to reduce expenses that are not necessary and as a first step, actors have come forward to bear their caravan expenses which is certainly a welcome move. We will also be working together to bring down further needless expenditure in due course."
