‘Innocent blood being spilt’: Rajinikanth
November 01, 2008
On a day marked by speeches by almost all leading names of Kollywood, the major demand was for ceasefire followed by peaceful talks. Speaking at the event, Rajinikanth too upheld the common sentiment and reiterated that ceasefire was the only way out. In a very charged speech, he said that the blood of innocent people should never be spilt and a place where

such things happen can never prosper. He added that the atrocities being inflicted on people would haunt the country forever. He pointed out that the war situation in Sri Lanka had been prevailing for over 35 years now. If military mite was the answer to the problem, then the solution should have been reached long back. What these 35 years has shown is that the people who are struggling are not going to give up and that there was something seriously wrong with the way military force was being used in Sri Lanka. He added that the protest was aimed at making the world aware of what really was happening and that the big nations of the world had a responsibility to ensure that such things do not happen.

Earlier, Kamal had said that problems were bound to occur when contentious issues were touched upon and that is what happened in the case of Ameer and Seeman. However, the right side prevailed when both of them walked free to a great welcome. He also said that seeing this as just an Indo-Sri Lanka issue was not enough. There should be no place in the world where innocent people have to struggle for existence.

As expected, the evening had a bit of a political flavor when Vijayakanth and Sarath Kumar took stage. Vijayakanth later spoke to reporters off the dais and said that the TN government was raising this issue at this time in order to cover up for its other inadequacies. Viduthalai Siruthaikal leader Thol Thirumavalavan was another prominent speaker at the event.

The fast came to an end at 4 P.M. after veteran actor S.S. Rajendran handed fruit juice to the participants. The members made a collective donation of Rs. 45 lakhs towards the welfare of the Lankan Tamils. Later, Ajith met the Chief Minister and donated Rs. 5 lakhs towards the relief of the Tamils.
