Director-actor Cheran said that Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya was a not a crowd-puller during the first week of its release. Speaking at the audio launch of Virundaali, Cheran said that Gautham Menon was concerned that VTV would be thrown out of the theatres with not enough crowds pouring in during the first week. However, word of mouth from the audience had pushed the film to an astounding success. Cheran rued that if theatre owners decide to pack off a film within a short time, then it is the filmmakers who would suffer. He added that movie buffs will also miss a chance to see these films in theaters and opt for DVDs.

Reacting to this, the Producers’ Council president Rama Narayanan said that plans are afoot to form a commission to discuss such issues.
