Nakkalu Mama

Singers: Santhosh Hariharan, Sai, Azhagesan, Tamil Nanda, Muthu Chamy, Pooja AV

Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

An impressive mélange of modern sounds and folk flavor paves the way for this interesting album. Effectively laced with feisty nadaswaram, thavil blended with a modern rhythm section, this track is thoroughly enjoyable with the best of both worlds. The track is high on energy levels with the masterful stroke of nativity as well.

Kanjadai

Singers: VV Prasanna, Vandana Srinivasan

Lyrics: Yugabharati

It is time for a gripping folk number sung commendably with no limitations or inhibitions by Prasanna and Vandana Srinivasan. Yugabharati’s lyrics are fun filled and add value to this brilliant composition. The interludes take the listener the world of Western Classical and a sudden return trip to local flavours in no time. A very special mention should be made for Vandana Srinivasan’s low octave rendition with such great perfection!

Yaarai Ketpadhu

Singer: Gangai Amaran

Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

An emotional detour from the experienced vocals of Gangai Amaran arrives next in a heavy heart. The melancholic string section and mild treble sets the ideal stage for an introspective journey. The interludes speak of the emotional turmoil in the form of string section and amazing empathy. Full marks for Gangai Amaran’s mesmerizing rendition! The track has an irresistible flavor of Carnatic Raaga Maayamalagowla tweaked to sadness.

Ayyankuli

Singers: Mukesh, Thala Muthu, Raaja, Karuppan, Tamil, Pichai Arasan

Lyrics: Yegathasi

The overall mood transforms to a rustic celebration with a raw folk number topped with ghatam touches and sultry vocals of Mukesh and Thala Muthu. This track has a great aura for the fresh ambience it creates which represents laid back pastoral life in the musical canvas. The interludes feature a funky duel between nadaswaram and rock steady ghatam.

Tea Podu

Singer: Deva

Lyrics: Lalithanand

The finale strikes hard with an Arabic flavoured gypsy number which flawlessly changes to a modern composition laced with trumpets and live drumming. Lyrics by Lalithanand speak about the brilliance of tea in a storytelling manner and Deva does complete justice to this entertaining number. Gopi Sunder comes out of his melodious comfort zone and experiment on funky flavor and passes with flying colors!

Verdict: Anjala is a decent fun album that stays honest to its folksy aroma!
