The Madras High Court had issued a ban on hoardings and flex boards in 2017. However, despite the ban, many times, illegal hoardings are seen on roads. Taking a firm step, the HC on December 11 stated that recognised and registered political parties cannot erect digital banners or placards on either side of arterial roads, platforms, walkways or any other road throughout the State.

With former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's birthday coming up this month, AIADMK member N Balaganga had filed a petition to relax the ban. He had requested for permission to erect flex boards of Jayalalithaa across Chennai from February 22 to 26 to commemorate her birth anniversary.

However, Madras HC refused to relax the ban. It stated that several violations of the ban have been reported for the past six years. It also pointed out that though recently action was taken against those who violated the law, nothing has been done to prevent such incidents.
