India to send three-person crew to space for first time

India is reportedly all set to send people to space for the first time ever. The space programme was announced by the Minister of State for Atomic Energy and Space, Jitendra Singh at a press conference in New Delhi.

 

The space flight named Gaganyaan will send a three-person crew to space for a duration of seven days. The spacecraft will be placed in a low orbit of 300-400 km. Two unmanned Gaganyaan mission will take place before sending the astronauts.

 

The mission is expected to be completed before 2022 and will cost less than Rs 10,000 crore. Singh reportedly said, "The mission will make India the fourth nation in the world to launch a Human Spaceflight Mission."

 

Before officially disclosing the details, the programme was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech. He announced that some young boys and girls will unfurl the Tricolour in space before 2022.
