A glimpse of Srividya’s life and death
Oct 20, 2006

Srividya lost her battle against the deadly cancer and succumbed to the disease leaving an irrevocable loss to the film circles and her fans prominently in Tamil and Malayalam. The charismatic artist graced the screens of the regional languages down south with her alluring personality, irresistible smile, and consummate acting prowess during her career, which spanned for more than four decades. Srividya had the ability to create a flutter among the audience whenever she attended a public function with her elegant looks, which is rare to someone of her age.

Srividya

Debut at 13

She made her debut with Thiruvarutselvar at a tender age of thirteen, which had the emperor of Tamil cinema Sivaji. She went on to adorn the screens with her mere presence and her widely acclaimed looks. She acted in more than 900 movies and was seen last in the Tamil movie London playing Prashanth’s mother a year ago. She left the movie scene abruptly and relocated to Trivandrum, Kerala where she concentrated on her career in Malayalam television. She was seen in quite a few Malayalam sitcoms in lead roles.

Her latest sitcom Ammathampuratti had to be wrapped up in just 45 episodes as against the planned 200 episodes owing to her failing health. She was diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer and was undergoing treatment in Kochi at the Amritha Institute of Medical Technology for sometime before she was moved to Avittam Thirunal hospital in Trivandrum.

Srividya – a bundle of talents

Srividya came from an artistic background. Her mother, M.L. Vasanthakumari, was a famous Karnatic singer and is acclaimed worldwide even now. Her father was a mimic artist and Srividya inherited both talents, which she displayed in her acting career.

Her famous movies in Tamil include Apoorva Ragangal, Sollathan Ninaikkiraen, and Imayam. In Malayalam Idavazhiyila Poocha Minda Poocha, Theekkanal, Deivathinde Vikridigal, and Panjavadi Palai are few of her notable movies and she received the best actress award from the Kerala government twice. She also was honored with the best actress award by the Tamil Nadu government to acknowledge her acting prowess

Disastrous personal life

Her personal life was a disaster and her husband George went to the court to claim the house, which was built out of her money in the upscale area of Chennai, Raja Annamalaipuram. After a lot of struggle she won the case against him and eventually a divorce from him, but the incident left a huge impact on her personal life. She relocated to Chennai, which was always her hometown, to Kerala in search of peace and concentrated on her mini screen career.

A good singer and a dancer too

Srividya was a trained singer and excelled in dance forms such as Mohiniyattam. She, with her sister had performed Mohiniyattam in numerous stages during her childhood days. She has even sung for a Tamil movie Amaran.

Srividya’s ‘No-entry’ for visitors

She spent the last days of her life estranging herself from her friends and relatives. She was taken care by her friend and co-artist Ganesh, who is a Malayalam actor and his mother. Srividya denied permission to visitors during her days ensuing her end. However, Kamal paid a visit to her at the Avittam Thirunal Hospital in Trivandrum and offered her to fly anywhere in the world for medical attention.

She was 53 when a heart attack and an internal bleeding took her away. Her body was kept for public homage in Trivandrum and later cremated with due government respects in Kerala. Her brother set fire on her pyre. The demise of Srividya has left hollowness behind in the tinsel town, which can never be replaced.

Behindwoods joins her bereaving fans and deeply mourns the loss of Srividya.
