tells the story of a CIA officer who is
accused of being a sleeper spy (someone
planted in the Washington office) for Russia.
Cruise had shown a great deal of interest
in the project, but has now bowed out. Angelina
Jolie will now play the lead. She liked
the script and asked the studio to rewrite
the part for her.
Jolie has been proving a bankable action
star, especially after the recent success
of the very stylish and explosive thriller,
Wanted, which grossed $132 million in the
U.S. She was able to pull off being an action
heroine in Laura Croft and Mr. and Mrs.
Smith. Salt will be directed by Philip Noyce
who makes a comeback to the espionage thriller
after the Tom Clancy -Jack Ryan series.
Interestingly, it will be co-produced by
an Indian American, Sunil Perkash., whose
credits also include the movie, Enchanted.
