The Higher Education Empowerment Agency is reportedly planning to regulate University Grants Commission and All India Council of Technical Education into a single body. According to reports, "Both Niti and HRD ministry officials are working on the proposal. It was felt that multiple regulatory bodies led to excessive and restrictive regulation and hence contributed to lack of institutional autonomy”. Notably, HRD ministry is also working with Niti aayog to bring technical as well as non-technical institutions under the same umbrella.
