' DIRECTOR ' K. BHAGYARAJ

Bhagyaraj

Bhagyaraj was a trendsetter of his times. When he came into cinema, it was still in the hold of directors who made people weep with long dialogues and sentimental touches.

. He broke away from the tradition and concentrated on thick plots with superb twists. He was a natural story teller and hence his felicity with crafting the screenplay is understandable. Having come with a theatre background, he knew the nuances of presentation and kept up his conviction that a good screenplay is essential for the success of a film.He started out as an assistant to veteran Bharatiraja. When he struck out on his own, the audience simply lapped up his offerings. Andha ezhu natkal, Mouna geethangal, Kannipparuvathile, Mundhanai mudichu, Thavanikkanavugal, Darling, darling, darling, Pounu pounuthan, Sundarakandam, Gnanapazham – the list is not exhaustive. His career spanned nearly two decades and during this period he enjoyed mass popularity not only as a good actor but also as a talented director. All his films were jubilee hits.

He had the unique ability to weave comedy into the main plot and his body language contributed in no less measure. He has acted with all the leading heroines of his era. Married to actress Poornima, he has a son, Shantanu and daughter, Sharanya. He had a successful stint as a magazine editor. Things did not go well for a couple of years and he stayed away from films. He made a tentative entry into television and the success buoyed him to make a comeback in films. His Chokkathangam did not do well, but undeterred he is launching his daughter in Parijatham. The film is shaping up well and we hope the classic Bhagyaraj touch will sparkle once again. Good luck, mate!
