This film was produced by Kamal and directed by Bharathan. It was a commentary on the feudal system prevailing in the southern districts of Tamilnadu where a seemingly minor issue could flare up into violent clashes and result in bloodshed. It was a sort of comeback for veteran Sivaji Ganesan who played the majestic elder member of the family

consisting of two sons, Thalaivasal Vijay and the foreign educated Kamal. Kamal comes on a short vacation nursing ambitions of starting a hotel venture. But, fate would have otherwise and he steps into the shoes of his demised father. He follows a conciliatory path with the other family led by Kakka Radhakrishnan and his son, Nasser. But he is forced to kill Nasser in the climax. The film closes with the message of non-violence and tolerance. Kamal proved his versatility by bringing realism to the portrayal of the educated son and the reluctant heir.
