Tamil Movie Review : E
‘E’ review – Good movie, bad timing
E

Cast : Jeeva, Nayantara

Language : Tamil

Music : Srikanth Deva

Director : SP Jananadhan

Production : RB Choudry

Firstly, a pat for S.P. Jananadhan – the national award winner - for his out of the box thinking. If you are bored to death watching slapstick comedies, mushy romances, and gory violence on screen, then E is worth a bet. Not that the movie does not have any of those in it, but E deals with the not-so-unexplored genre in Tamil, perhaps Indian movie making. It is the tale of those innocent lots who often find themselves the prey of evil-minds in their creepy researches.
The plot seems to be out of the world for an Indian movie, but Jananadhan manages his best to do justice to the movie. Power packed with some amazing performances by Jeeva, Pasupathy, Ashish Vidhyarthi, and Nayantara, E is definitely worth the money that is spent on the tickets.
Substance
Ashish Vidhyarthi is an agent of the international mafia, which targets at the poor to test their eerie researches on. Ashish is a jackal in goat’s coat with an identity of a free medical practitioner. Pasupathy, on the other hand is an ‘Indian’ style individual who has set out to uproot individuals like Ashish. Jeeva who is an urchin in the slums crosses roads with Pasupathy in the mean time and what happens next in the ‘biowar’ is E

Show stealers
Jeeva has undoubtedly done a magnificent job with this and proves that he is not just another star from the VIP household. He comes off with flying colors with his performance and has fit in the shoes of E perfectly.

It is not surprising that you get an awkward feeling of the character onscreen – the one you get when you witness an outrageous rascal in real life - which by itself is a credit to the actor. He dons the robe of a rogue in the ghetto and the love scenes with him and Nayantara definitely are atypical than those you see in the run of the mill movies.

Given the prowess of Pasupathy, it goes without saying that he is just perfect with this. For a change, he is in a positive role though. Ashish shows his vindictiveness in his eyes and presents the audience with a sinister feel.

No skin show for Nayantara in this neither did she have any makeup. Her minute expressions come alive on her plump face and she is retained in your memory even after you finished watching the movie. Not in a raunchy sense though, but on the other hand on a sympathetic note.

Jana’s careful selection of star cast did not fail him in E and every other character in the movie is as perfect as anyone else.
Thumbs up and thumbs down

Though Jana has carefully selected the plot to deliver an extraordinary movie, he could just have concentrated on the plot because his attempt to elevate the movie to a science fiction adventure is visible in more than a couple of frames and particularly in the climax. That and a few clichés that could have been avoided are the thumbs down of the movie.

There are many scenes to substantiate this though. Nayantara’s passionate love lacks solid reason; Ashish, who is a sinister villain involved in disgusting researches that are supposed to be secret, blows his own (evil) horns to his nurse, and Jeeva, out of the blue changes his mind just at a piece of advice granted by Pasupathi.
Varalaru
There is no heed to the music probably because the story is so overwhelming. Vidhyasagar’s music in two songs is worth listening to though and the background score is just above ordinary.

Finally…

Had it been released in a different time, the movie would have gathered enough attention with the kind of subject that is dealt with. With the Diwali season and the onset of monsoon downpour, E attracts meager audience to the theatres.

That most certainly does not mean that the movie is not worth watching. On the other hand, E has elements in it that will bring accolades to its crew.
