Udhayanidhi Stalin has submitted a petition to the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Association

Udhayanidhi Stalin escalates his tax exemption issue

Oct 22, 2013

Udhayanidhi Stalin, the head honcho of Red Giant Movies has submitted a detailed petition to the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Association, requesting them to intervene immediately as films being produced by Red Giant Movies such as Neerparavai, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi and the recent Vanakkam Chennai have been rejected for tax exemption repeatedly.

In a petition letter addressed to the President and Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Association, Udhayanidhi Stalin has appealed for suitable action to be taken to prevent alleged irregularities committed by the Commercial Taxes Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu in giving entertainment tax exemption.

The letter begins by stating the eligibility criteria for Tamil films to be granted entertainment tax exemption. It then goes on to talk about the seven member committee (3 official members and 4 non-official members) that watches every film and decides whether to grant tax exemption to it or not.

It then states that a set of 4 to 5 members were found to be seeing all these tax exemption rejected films without fail, such as the recent Thalaivaa, Vanakkam Chennai and also Neerparavai and Oru Kal Oru Kannadi.

Some members of the committee have also been accused, in the letter submitted to the media by Red Giant, of bringing along their friends and relatives for the screening, which is against acceptable protocol.

The letter brings out 5 irregularities which have been observed in the workings of this committee (G.O No. 89/ 21.07.2011 and G.O No. 002/ 03.01.2012) and explains them in detail.

Towards the end, it is also mentioned in the letter that a member of this committee, Dr.M.Rajendran, Deputy Director (Administration) Directorate of Tamil Development, who recommended for Vanakkam Chennai's tax exemption, was immediately transferred.

Udhayanidhi Stalin states that even distributors and theater owners who associate with his films, are getting affected due to this stated unfair entertainment tax rejection and requested the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Association to take up his cause.
