Catalonia declares independence from Spain

The Catalan regional parliament on Friday reportedly approved a motion declaring independence from Spain after 90% of potential voters voted in favour of independence during a referendum. Reportedly, 70 MPs voted in favour of the motion, 10 against, and two abstentions in the 135-seat chamber, with the opposition boycott. Meanwhile, the Madrid government has sacked Catalonia’s president and dismissed its parliament on Friday.
