The 70-year-old Bhuvaneswari looked helpless at the Collector office Vellore when she sought help for exchanging old Indian currencies. Reportedly she said, "I don't know about Demonetization".

Vellore old woman says she is not aware of demonetization

Bhuvaneswari went to the People Welfare Meet which is being organised every week at the IAS office Vellore. Since IAS officer Shanmugasundaram went out of station regarding some other office work, district revenue officer Parthiban collected the petitions.

One of the petitioners was the 70-year old Bhuvaneswari from Salavanpettai, Choolaimedu. The woman had bulk 500-rupee old currencies which amounted to Rs 12,000 in total. The woman said that she was abandoned by her husband and worked as a daily wager to earn all the money.

Further, she added that she was not aware of demonetization and requested to change the old currencies into new currencies.

Since Bhuvaneswari was suffering from Tuberculosis, she could not work anymore and has been receiving treatment from the Government Medical college hospital located in Adkampaarai, Vellore.

Unfortunately Revenue officer Parthiban consulted higher authorities and declined Bhuvaneswari's request citing Reserve Bank's order. Demonetization was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8 2016 according to which the old 500 rs and 1000 rs currencies will not be valid.
