School fines Rs 300 for speaking in Tamil, girl complains to collector

A Class 9 student on Tuesday reportedly filed a petition to Coimbatore district collector Hariharan saying the English-medium school she is studying in imposes a fine of Rs 300 if students speak in Tamil inside the campus. Sri Sakthi Matric Higher Secondary School in Chettipalayam near Pothanur in Coimbatore also compelled the Class 8 and Class 9 students to clean the school in the name of ‘Cleanliness Drive’, the girl reportedly said. Further, when 26 students were told to clean the toilets in the school on a hot day last week, three girls fainted, the girl alleged. According to her, she suffered infection and the school fined her Rs 500 even after submitting medical certificates.
