Police firing in Thoothukudi: NHRC issues notice to TN govt.

The National Human Rights Commission has reportedly issued notices to Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and TK Rajendran, Director General of Police, on the police firing in Thoothukudi. The Commission has sought their response within two weeks. The NHRC has questioned why proper rules were not followed while resorting to firing at the people who protested against the Sterlite copper plant.

It is alleged that the police did not follow the rules properly while dealing with the frenzied protesters. While the police are expected to fire below the knee, most of the people, who were killed in the firing, had bullet injuries on their chests. Notably, a 17-year-old school girl was among those who were killed in the shooting and she was allegedly shot in the mouth.

Earlier, the Union Home Ministry ordered the state government to submit a detailed report on the tragic incident which claimed the lives of at least 11 people.
