MTC buses in TN to be fitted with CCTV cameras facing road

According to reports, government buses in Tamil Nadu may get CCTV cameras fitted by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). Reportedly, this will help keep an eye on troublemakers who cause accidents on the roads. The cameras will likely be fitted on the outside of the vehicle above the left rearview mirror facing the road.

The proposal was discussed during a meeting at the Pallavan House on Monday. An MTC official reportedly said, "We are planning to use the fund allocated by the state transport department for improving road safety. Once we get their nod, tenders would be floated."

According to reports, 1,665 accidents have been caused involving MTC buses in the year 2016-2017. Surprisingly, 75 percent of the MTC bus accidents were reported caused in the front. Even though the accidents are mostly caused by the negligence of two-wheeler drivers, the blame gets pinned on the bus drivers. The instalment of CCTV cameras can help identify the cause of the accidents
