Batting first, Mumbai scored 161 for 4 in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav top-scored with 52 and Tilak Varma with 38. For Kolkata, Pat Cummins took 2 wickets and Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakraborty took 1 wicket each. Mumbai Indians scored 23 runs in the last over bowled by Pat Cummins.

Kolkata, who set a target of 162, stumbled early in the innings. But the team's opening batsman Venkatesh Iyer stood firm. Pat Cummins, the team's fast bowler, came in after 5 wickets for 101 runs and hit 56 off 15 balls (4 fours and 6 sixes) to lead the team to victory in 16 overs. Cummins scored 35 in the only over bowled by Daniel Sams.

Speaking after the match, KKR captain Shreyas said, "Extraordinary! I couldn't believe the way he (Cummins) was hitting the ball. Because yesterday in the nets, he was getting bowled now and then, I was batting in the nets beside him then."
