CSK after winning the toss decided to bat first against the regular norm of chasing. Faf Du Plessis and Scott Kuggeleijn were going to make their first appearances for CSK this season.

CSK win at chennai against KXIP

Shane Watson opened the Batting with Faf du Plessis and combined for an opening partnership of 56 runs. Faf Du Plessis was batting very well as Shane Watson fell in the 8th over. Raina walked out to bat at 3 but was not able to get going. R Ashwin bowled very well and managed to get the top 3 batsmen out. Dhoni once again finished off the innings well with an unbeaten 37 from 23 balls and Rayudu supported him well and took CSK to a total of 160 in the 20 overs.

CSK had the perfect start with Harbhajan picking up a double-wicket maiden in the second over of the innings picking up the dangerous Gayle and Agarwal. KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan then took the game deep, picking off the spinners and not taking too many risks. they went after the pacers but were very conservative against the spinners. With spinners bowling till the 17th over of the innings they didn't take them on and left 46 of the last 3 overs of pace. Kiggeleijn coming back in the 18th over picked up KL Rahul in the 3rd ball which was a huge wicket at that stage. Miller coming in started off with a boundary and eased the pressure. After bowling 2 beamers, Chahar came back well and picked up Miller of the last ball. With 26 to win off the last over, they needed a Russell like effort but it was never going to be easy.

Kings XI Punjab would have felt that they left a bit too much to do off the last over and would have liked to take a few more risks in the initial overs. They were not able to do what Dhoni did for CSK at the end of the innings and hence lost the game.
