Young Achievers Matrimony Meet draws flak for being sexist, classist

Advertisements for the Young Achievers Matrimony Meet have been going around on newspapers and social media for the past few days and it has unsurprisingly, not been received well. The advertisement carried an invitation for a matrimonial meet at the Leela Palace in Bengaluru.

Except it was not so simple. The ad was high time sexist, classist and elitist. The matrimonial meet to be held on August 12 was only for young achievers. Only those who are successful entrepreneurs, successful professionals (IAS, IPS), youngsters graduated from top universities (IIT, IIM), highly recognised young achievers and 'beautiful girls' could attend the meet.

Youngsters with ultra-rich families and VVIP families were also invited for the meet. The registration fee was even more insane, with Rs 10,000 for young achievers and Rs 25,000 from high net worth families. A Twitter user wrote, "Young achievers matrimony meet. Achievements include successful entrepreneurship, entry into elite universities... or for women, just being beautiful.(sic)"

Speaking to the event organiser, N Sreeram, TNM reported him saying, "We have made the mistake of putting beautiful girls under achievers category. Now, all of India is criticising us. Who will come to the event now?" Sreeram informed that he intends to write an apology letter to be published in The Hindu for his error.
