World’s third largest slum is in India

According to a report in Hindustan Times, 51% of India’s slums are in the just five states - Chattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Bihar - which are the top five states by the number of slums per 100 households, as per 2008 - 2009 data. Further, Tamil Nadu had the highest share of India’s slums or 30%, say the report. Notably, Dharavi in Mumbai is the world’s third largest slum by population. Reportedly, more than 10% of the SC/ST and deprived population live in slums.
