In an aim to promote Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to reduce single use plastic, the Railways will help recharge phones of passengers if they use plastic bottle crushing machines installed at stations.

Railways to help recharge phones of passengers; commuters happy

During his 73rd Independence Day speech, PM Modi had requested the nation to eliminate single-use plastic and find alternatives to plastic water bottles.

Following that, railways have issued orders from October 2, single-use plastic will not be used there after.

As per The Hindu report, Railway Board Chairman V.K. Yadav has said that the railways will install 400 bottle-crushing machines at stations, in which a passenger wanting to use them will have to key in his phone number into the machine and his phone will be recharged. However, details of the recharge were not known immediately.

Currently, there are 160 bottle-crushing machines available at 128 stations, The Hindu further reported.

Further giving more details over this initiative, Yadav said that instructions have been given to railway staff to collect all the used plastic bottles and send them for recycling.

This initiative will be administered and come into action on October 2.
