Nirbhaya rapists plead to be excused from death penalty at SC

Four of the accused who raped 'Nirbhaya' in December 2012, pleaded the Supreme Court to spare them from the death penalty. Reportedly, they claimed, "The death penalty is a cold-blooded killing in the form of justice."

The Supreme Court on Friday reserved its verdict as two of the accused pleaded saying that they "are young and from poor families." The accused wanted their death penalty to be converted into a life imprisonment.

The convicts' lawyer argued that they were not habitual offenders and had no criminal records. He also stated that death penalty has been banned in many countries to which the Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra replied, "Death penalty exists in the statute."
