2015-LIKE DEADLY HEATWAVES THAT KILLED 2,500 PEOPLE COULD HIT INDIA SOON: CLIMATE CHANGE REPORT

India could soon face an annual threat of deadly heatwaves, similar to the one in 2015 that killed at least 2,500 people, if the world gets warmer by 2 degree Celsius over pre-industrial levels, says the world's biggest review report on climate change.

According to a report in Times of India, the report highlighted that both India and Pakistan could be the worst affected in the event of a 2 degree Celsius increase.

Avoiding global climate chaos will require a major transformation of society and the world economy that is "unprecedented in scale," the UN said Monday in the landmark report that warns time is running out to avert disaster.

The Earth's surface temperature has increase by one degree Celsius - enough to lift oceans and unleash deadly storms, floods and droughts. The planet is on track towards an unlivable 3 degree or 4 degree rise.

"The next few years are probably the most important in human history," Debra Roberts, head of the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department in Durban, South Africa, and an IPCC co-chair, told AFP.
