OK Jaanu is the remake of Mani Ratnam’s romantic-drama OK Kanmani that talks about a young couple madly in love with each other but who doesn't believe in the practice of marriage. Yes, it is another film that speaks of a live-in relationship.

When it was made in Tamil, the live-in relationship was an unexplored topic on screen and hence it was new, but Bollywood has many films on this subject. In Tamil, it was a challenge for the couple to have a live-in relationship but in Mumbai, which is culturally different from Tamil Nadu, there are no such difficulties and hence the absence of such a conflict in OK Jaanu mutes the effect completely.

AR Rahman's music has already scorched the charts, and the songs are the strong pillars of the film. The audience breaks into a thunderous rapture with Humma Humma track. All the songs are brilliantly captured through the lens of Ravi K Chandran which only highlights the effects of them though most of them are only shown as montages. Enna Sonna is a poetic delight when the music, lyrics and the grey scale visuals weave a magical spell!

The coming back of hot hit pair Aditya and Shraddha Kapoor has given a facelift to the film. It is needless to say they look great together, but their love drama sounds like a juvenile play. OK Jaanu is almost a frame to frame remake of the Tamil OK Kanmani, but the emotional scenes are cut short and or removed, perhaps with the idea that it would increase the pace of the film. However, it only works against the movie.

If OK Kanmani was so artistically made, this remake is so artificially made. The whole play looks superficial. There is so much cuddling romance throughout yet you feel there is no real love in it. Naseeruddin Shah, however, has done his part really well.

Classics are not made just by imitating another to the T. A successful imposter is one who does not spoil the reputation of its original. Emotions have a crucial role to play in a love story which however is missing in this product. The love is just NOT in the air.

Verdict: Technically brilliant but emotionally it is just not there!

OK JAANU SONGS REVIEW

Review by : Behindwoods Review Board Album Release Date : Jan 04,2017

Ok Jaanu is an upcoming romantic entertainer starring Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles. Music for the film is composed by A.R.Rahman and directed by Shaad Ali. The film is remake of Tamil hit Ok Kanmani directed by Mani Ratnam. Lyrics for the songs have been dealt with by Gulzar, Mehboob and Badshah.

The Humma Song

Singers:  Jubin Nautiyal, Shashaa Tirupati

Mozart of Madras's 90s chartbuster Humma Humma from Bombay has been remastered and it is done in a effortless style. Instead of additional loops and hard hitting beats, he chooses the mellowed down beats which give an air of a chillout lounge song with the beauty of the original composition. Jubin and Shashaa perform par excellence with their stylish vocals which are exactly needed for this number. This version would sure find a great appeal for the younger lot who missed the initial era of A.R.Rahman!

Ok Jaanu Title track

Singers: A. R. Rahman, Srinidhi Venkatesh

The high voltage number Mental Manadhil which rocked the entire South India in the year 2015 now arrives in the magical lyrics of Gulzar. The combination of A.R.Rahman and Gulzar never disappointed and this song also follows the same. Rahman’s swift vocals are like a lifeline for this number and the trance beats get an additional punch as well. The song again scores well and doesn’t disappoint the lovers of the original composition!

Enna Sona

Singers : Arijit Singh

A beautiful number with the touch of Sufism arrives next with Arijith Singh’s magical vocals and Gulzar’s poetic vocals. The electric guitar and amazing usage of flute is another asset. A.R.Rahman delivers par excellence and gets to his melodious best for this feel good number.

Jee Lein

Singers: Savitri R Prithvi, Arjun Chandy, Neeti Mohan, A.R.Rahman

The racy trance composition arrives in a new avatar with poetic Hindi lyrics which strike the inevitable chord of life. The addictive rhythm section brings a great effect despite its mellowed style.  The Hindustani aalap is quite appealing and effortlessly fuses with the original composition. In short, this song is a mélange of Trance with Carnatic Veena and the amazing Hindustani flavor punch!

Kaara Fankara

Singers: Paroma Das Gupta, Shashaa Tirupati, Hard Kaur, ADK, Kaly, Ashima Mahajan

The Hip-hop marvel scores again with the lyrics department while the original composition is retained with additional Rap portions. The song gets an additional contemporary flavor with additional beats and rhythm section. Instead of using Hindi rap, Rahman uses the stylish Hip-Hop rap which gives the song an international flavor instead of fusion effect.

Saajan Aayo Re

Singers: Jonita Gandhi, Nakash Aziz, A.R.Rahman

The haunting composition in Raag Darbaari Kaanada gets the Hindustani beauty with magical lyrics by Gulzar once again. Jonita Gandhi performs par excellence and brings a new dimension to this amazing number. Nakash Aziz joins the royal composition in his own persona and vigor.

Maula Wa Salim

Singers: A.R.Ameen

The delicate and innocent sufi prayer is retained as is from the original version and for good reasons. The song would sure strike a devotional chord among majority of the listeners.

Sunn Bhavra

Singers: Shashaa Tirupati

The wonderful singer Shashaa delivers a Hindustani number in Raag Behag with her own perception and brilliance. Rahman once again proves that he is a master of Hindustani classical numbers as well with this sweet number. The strong tabla base and mild strings are wonderfully in communion which gives a divine feel.  This song gives the album a marvelous Hindustani flavor which is the need of the hour!

Verdict: Ok Jaanu is an album where contemporary sound meets tradition- in the so called A.R.Rahman style!
