Director Sriram Raghavan has managed to create his own little space in Bollywood with his brand of stylized action thrillers like Johnny Gaddar and Agent Vinod. Action buffs tend to like his films, and with his latest Badlapur, Sriram shows the life of a man (Raghu) who is consumed by the quest for revenge, after his wife and young child are accidentally murdered by a duo of robbers. While one of the robbers escapes scot-free, the other is sentenced to 20 years in jail. Raghu struggles to move on and goes into a shell, far away from the city, leading a grim, secluded life. Whether he manages to execute his revenge and is there any redemption in sight for him? Watch Badlapur to know more.

The film works for the most part thanks to its sense of mood, the atmospherics and its overall execution. Sriram gets the style and treatment right, and even though the film meanders towards the end, the overall product is definitely watchable. The film sours at the halfway mark and looks really promising in the initial parts of the second half, but the finale doesn't live up to the earlier promise.

The performances by the male leads, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Varun Dhawan, are top-notch. Nawaz plays to the gallery with his lines, gestures and body language and aces the part totally. It's a stark departure for Varun from his 'goody' roles so far, and he completely looks the part as the brooding and menacing young family man who has nothing more to lose. Varun shows great versatility at such an early stage of his career, and ought to gain a newer fan base with Badlapur's outcome.

The ladies in the film are required to play the 'seductress' in quite a few scenes and be it Radhika Apte or Huma Qureshi or Divya Dutta, they just scorch the screens with their sensuality and vulnerability. Radhika and Huma shed all their inhibitions when it comes to undressing, and come out very convincingly. Yami Gautam as the dead wife, is as sweet and gorgeous as ever, and sequences of her romance with Varun are mostly interspersed as memories.

The music score by Sachin - Jigar is among the major high points of the film. The BGM is in line with the film's theme and doesn't take our senses away from the content. The songs look and sound very apt on screen, with the likes of Jee Karda and Jeena Jeena already being crowd favorites. Anil Mehta's focused work on the visuals must have come in very handy for director Sriram in translating his vision on screen.

The film definitely warrants the 'A' certificate by the censors, and there are generous visuals of violent imagery, blood shed and sex. Badlapur may not work for a mainstream family audience, and the appeal ought to be more niche.
Verdict: An unflinching and intense tale of revenge
