From the director of much-loved movies like 'A Wednesday' and 'Special 26', comes yet another action thriller based on terrorism and the Indian government's efforts in tackling such extremism in the name of Islam. We are talking about Neeraj Pandey and he teams up with Akshay Kumar again in Baby, a movie about an elite anti-terrorism squad which is assigned on dangerous covert missions with the sole mission of taking out terrorists and protecting the nation.

Baby is a gripping affair for the most part despite its run time of more than 160 minutes. The film gets underway very well and the interest is incited right away. There aren't any twists and turns and it's a straight shootout against the bad guys. Baby does look like being inspired from similar Hollywood classics such as Argo and Zero Dark Thirty, particularly in the final action block in Saudi Arabia.

The film has just one little song, where we get to see Akshay Kumar's other side as a family man who isn't able to spend much time with his wife and two little kids. This aspect of doing away with elements like song and dance, romance has to be appreciated. There is some natural situational comedy integrated into the proceedings which are serious all the way.

Akshay Kumar means all business as the special agent who is relentless, and is referred to as 'Tarzan' due to his hyper-energetic ways. It's a cakewalk for 'Akki' though the fake mustache looks out of place. Rana Daggubati, referred as 'Hulk', doesn't get to emote and is there just to lift people and be the perennial 'Yes Man'. Anupam Kher as the grumpy old agent gets a few lines targeted at the gallery, while Taapsee is involved in a nice action sequence where she kicks some serious booty. Danny Denzongpa gets a surprisingly clean role with no shades of grey and pulls it off with ease. Kay Kay Menon and a plethora of other actors are seen as terrorists and don't make a major mark as the good guys garner all the glory.

Baby is let down by a very ordinary background score; a good soundtrack could have elevated the proceedings much more. The visuals are engaging and have a greenish tone to them. We get to see some interesting locations such as Istanbul, Kathmandu, Saudi Arabia and also the standard Indian locales in Mumbai and Delhi.

Summing up, Baby is a pretty decent espionage thriller which is authentic in the way it has been shot. The production values are grand and it definitely is a big screen experience. The screenplay could have been spiced up more, as even though we do feel like clapping at times for some scenes and dialogues (particularly when Akshay says he would fill up INDIAN as his religion), the 'aww' moments aren't many.
Verdict: A well-made action thriller which will please its target audience
