Anurag
Kashyap after trying his hand
in fantasy genre with Hanuman
returns, comes back to his usual
genre – dark, psychological
drama. This is a modern version
of Devdas and Abhay Deol, the
multiplex favorite - enacts
the role which was made memorable
by Dilip kumar and recently
by Shahrukh khan. Will the new
Dev stand up to the old movies?
Will the talented Anurag Kashyap
prove his mantle as a capable
director again?
Dev D is one disturbingly brilliant
movie which is sure to |

rake
in many awards in international film festival
circuit. A movie which defies all the usual
clichés of Bollywood and comes up
with a realistic and rustic view of the
modern world which makes it worth the money
spent.
The story is about Dev, who has a childhood
sweetheart Paro. Due to some bad decisions
he complicates his own life and his love
is gone for ever. He couldn't stand the
pain so falls for drugs. Enter Chanda, a
modern girl who's involvement in a MMS scandal
is pushed into the world of prostitution,
falls in love with Dev. Will Dev do anything
different from what Devdas did to his life?
Check that out in a theatre near you.
First things first, this is an urban Gen-X
Devdas who is more into heroine, Vodka and
ganja than on whisky. And don’t expect
Paro to be the homely girl but a girl who
is ready to send a naked photo of hers to
her boy friend who lives abroad. With lot
of sex driven dialogues this film is only
for the matured audiences. Anurag Kashyap
is brilliant behind the cam and comes up
with a movie which sure proves that Black
Friday was no flash in the pan. This has
an international look to it from the word
go. But again the screenplay writer in him
looses focus a wee bit as the movie moves
at a snail’s pace. The second half
especially really tests audience's patience.
But if you are used to international award
movies this pace won’t affect you
and you will enjoy the life of this unlikely
hero.
Technically Dev D is revolutionary, cinematography
by Rajeev Ravi is brilliant and the camera
work when the protagonist is high is very
innovative and enjoyable. Music plays an
integral part of the movie and Amit Trivedi
comes up with a blinder, the popular ‘emotional
athyachar’ is welcomed with hugh applause
in the theatre and ‘Nayan tarse’
also sticks with you after the credits roll.
The editing for the movie is done like an
international movie and merits special mention.
The movie belongs to Abhay Deol and this
talented actor is so capable that he goes
through the role easily and comes out with
a cool performance. Mahi Gill is good but
Kalki Koechlin as Chanda is just too good
and overshadows Mahi's performance. Book
the best performance by a newcomer- female
award for Kalki as beating her would need
something spectacular. The rest of the crew
is functional.
Overall this is a movie with an old story
but the presentation is quite ahead of its
time, film buffs will love Anurag Kashyap's
masterpiece but people who are looking for
2 hours of entertainment would feel uncomfortable.
This is a dark, disturbing and slow movie
which is aimed at a niche audience.
Verdict: Applaud this gen-X Devdas
