Thank God it’s Friday
By Harish V.
August 03, 2007
It’s Friday again and my job is getting more and more interesting with as much as five new movies hitting the screens in Chennai. Two each from English and Hindi; and one from Tamil.

The happiest thing is that, all these five movies are from different genre - a good sign as the audience have a wide variety to choose from. Of course, the release of these five movies does affect the box-office potential of others in some way or the other.
Gandhi: My Father
Last week, Veerappu and Partner slowly managed to find acceptance among the movie-goers, but Thee Nagar missed the mark. This week, director P. Vasu is all set to launch his son Shakthi with Thotaal Poomalarum. The movie is made to showcase the talents of his son and has come out very well. Thotaal Poomalarum is not expected to create any havoc in the theatres but good word of mouth can help the movie in a big way.

There are two animated movies imported from Hollywood to woo the children. After Madagascar, the Penguin craze started to spread, which reflected in the superb reception of ‘March of the Penguin’ - a documentary - and Happy Feet. Both were not just a box-office hit but also won an Oscar each. Now the penguins are back with Sony Pictures Surfs Up and this time around the penguins will be surfing. The movie is released in India after a month’s gap from its US premiere.

The next movie is The Simpsons which is the filmy version of the most loved television series. The series was such a huge hit that it was named the best series of the twentieth century. Bart and company are ready to keep you in splits of laughter for two hours. Entertainment guaranteed.

In Hindi the much awaited Cash will be out at last. This action-thriller, directed by Anubhav Sinha, is said to have some amazing stunts and intelligent heists. The movie is a multi-starrer with Ajay Devgan and Suniel Shetty leading the group. The music has come out very well and is the favorite in any disco parlor.

Behindwoods’s Pick of the Week

The pick of the week is none other than the most controversial “Gandhi: My Father”, the film version of a hit drama Mahatma versus Gandhi by Feroze Khan. Incidentally he has directed the film too. The movie is produced by actor Anil Kapoor with Akshaye Khanna playing the protagonist Harilal, son of Gandhi.

The movie is about the sour relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his eldest son Harilal. Gandhi: My Father has generated enough hype to get a good opening and the multiplex audience is sure to lap up this masterpiece which is being acclaimed all over the world. The movie also said to have evinced the interest of Will Smith, the popular Hollywood hero, as he has expressed his desire to see the movie; such is the reach for this movie.
