A star night organized by a private
television channel in Dubai to honor
the Malayalam superstar Mammootty
with an award, turned out to be
a damp squib with the crowd turning
unruly.
The show was arranged to be held
at the Dubai Airport Exhibition
Grounds that has a capacity to hold
7,500 people. However, many of the
viewers without tickets also tried
to enter the venue to catch a glimpse
of their favorite star. Unable to
control the crowd, the police had
to be called in, who resorted to
lathi charge to control the crowd.
Several people were injured in the
melee and the show organizers decided
to cancel the event. Mammootty left
the venue midway.
