On
conferring the CNN-IBN Indian of the
Year award to Rahman, the Prime Minister
of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh said,
“Rahman’s music is inspirational...
When I heard Rahman in the White House,
you cannot imagine the sense of joy
and achievement…”
The award for entertainment was presented
to the Mozart of Madras for “lessening
the divide” through music.
Kamal Haasan who completed 50 years
in cinema, was given a special award
Others that were presented with the
prestigious award were Satyam revival
team for business, Saina Nehwal for
sports, The Indian cricket team, Pratham,
an NGO, for public service.
Rahul Gandhi, who was awarded the
politician of the year award, was
not present to receive the award as
he had prior commitments in Uttar
