“ACTRESSES MUST BE GLAMOUROUS” - OVIYA

Interview Team : Sudharshan

This attractive model turned actress made her debut in 2010 with Kalavani.  She took the industry by storm with Kalakalappu, when she transformed from a pretty girl next door to an ultra-glam babe. A bold actress that she is, Oviya has never shied away from challenges. Yet she has tactically managed to stay away from gossips. The actress is now back with yet another power packed performance in Yaamirukka Bayamey. Sudharshan Giridhar catches up with the beauty, as she elegantly walks us through her world!

Why cinema?

I love cinema. It is as simple as it sounds. I was a model before and cinema was an obvious option for me.

I was never interested in the 9 to 5 style of working. I wanted my work to be fun and I wanted to do it from my heart. Cinema, in every way possible, felt right.

What were your expectations while stepping into cinema?

Nothing… As I told you, I wanted my work to be real fun. I’ve never taken things too seriously and I wanted to keep this one simple too. Today is what matters to me. Every single day I want to be happy.

Every single day I want to be happy

How has cinema changed you?

Cinema has not changed me at all. I still remain how I was before Kalavani. But I do miss some petty joys, like going out for a late night walk in the beach, having a good hot cup of Chai at the road side tea shop.

Most of your films are multi-starrers. Why?

Not a conscious decision. But, I didn’t want to miss those films. I’ve also done some good solo subjects like Kalavani, Madha Yaanai Koottam and few others.

Have you ever been a part of or witnessed attitude issues with your co-actresses while doing multi-starrers?

Not really. I think I’m a good person to work with and I know I’m friendly. I try to keep my colleagues engaged with quality conversations. Also, I have done enough multi-starrers to know how to handle my co-stars.

I have done enough multi-starrers to know how to handle my co-stars.

Your sudden shift to glamour…

Actresses must be glamourous. I whole heartedly believe in that idea. At the same time, glamour must never be strained. Story is always the hero and if it really demands glamour, there’s no harm in doing it.

Personally, I have done both rural and glamour roles. I’m comfortable doing both. For a good script, I’ll do anything.

For a good script, I’ll do anything.

Yaamirukka Bayamey…

There are horror films and there are some good comedy movies too. But Yaamirukka Bayamey is special. It has both genres and in a perfect mix, thanks to our brilliant director. The experience will be new and something you wouldn’t have seen much. There’s no romance or songs, where the leads run around the tree and dance. Yaamirukka Bayamey is a lot of fun added with pinch of horror to it.

I play a stylish character in the film, who gives too much importance to the looks. There’s lot of scope for comedy for me in the movie. The right description of my character would be - A beauty with absolutely no brains.

Nanital experience…

The whole film happens inside a house. We shot it in Nainital.

To be frank, the travel it took to reach Nainital was tiresome, frustrating and anything but easy. But once we reached the spot, I felt it was worth the pain. What a beautiful place! I’m planning to visit Nainital again.

As far as shooting, sometimes we had to work for two or three continues days without break. The cold climate wasn’t very helpful. But it is a part of our job and in a way, when I look back now, it was fun and thrilling.

Also, when you have a young, cool team, you never feel the pain.

To spend time with new co-stars in a distant land is always a new experience. This time around I was gifted with a happening team. Kreshna was the life of the team. He is always energetic and like me he too loves to stay outside the caravan and spend time with the crew.

To be frank, the travel it took to reach Nainital was tiresome, frustrating and anything but easy.

Do you watch horror movies?

Yes a lot. Horror is my favourite genre and that’s actually why I agreed to do the film.

Who is your best critic?

I have my friends, who give me all kinds of comments. But, I think an actor should know what he or she must or mustn’t do. So, I am the best judge of my works. My happiness depends on the satisfaction of my work.

I am the best judge of my works.

The things that you love about the current generation actresses…

To start with, they are all very bold in their choices.

They handle gossips with such maturity, now days and they don’t let the gossips bring them down.

The gossips that really hurt you…

There haven’t been many gossips about me until now. But I guess, they are not pleasant experiences.

The project that you are really proud of…

Kalavani is close to my heart. It brought me into the industry. But, I don’t think I have done a project yet that I could call my proudest film. So, my best is yet to come.

At the same time I’m happy about all my projects and I enjoy whatever I do.

The biggest lesson cinema has taught you…

Cinema gave me the opportunity to meet many kinds of people. All my interaction has made me a better person in one way or the other. Cinema made me bold and open minded.

Cinema made me bold and open minded.

Policies as an actress…

Nothing really… As a matter of fact, I believe it is my duty to be flexible as an actress. I don’t say no at all, be it the kind of costumes or the nature of the character I play. I’m ready to do anything for the script I choose. I do not restrict myself.

I don’t even let my morals or social responsibilities come in the way of my acting career. I keep those to my personal life.

I believe it is my duty to be flexible as an actress

How much is your real life personality similar to that of reel life?

Apart from the body language, there’s no common thing between my onscreen characters and my original self. The characters are created by the directors and at the most the roles I play might have a bit of my influence.

The movies you’d love to do in the future…

I want to be part of female centric projects like, Fashion and Heroine. Those films really inspired me. You don’t see much female centric films in Tamil. I wish to see and be a part of such films here. Even if not female centric, I want to see film makers give equal importance to the female leads too, so that we have some strong scope to perform.

I want to be part of female centric projects like, Fashion and Heroine.

What kind of work do you do to better yourself as an actress?

I’m not the home work doing kind of person. I stick to what I know and I try not to copy anyone. I let the directors instruct me.

I stick to what I know

The most important requirements for an actress to sustain in the industry…

Patience and passion! When you love the job, you’ll never get tired or bored of it.

Future projects…

I’ve done a Hindi film titled Hath. The shooting is done. Other than that, I haven’t signed any other project yet.
