President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday reportedly gave his assent to the long-pending Prohibition of Child Marriage (Karnataka Amendment) Bill. The bill proposes to increase the penalty for child marriage and also broadens the powers of the police on such violations. Notably, 23.2 percent of reported child marriages happened in the state of Karnataka in 2016.
