Sanjay Dutt barred!
April 01, 2009

Sanjay Dutt’s plans to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections met a roadblock with the Supreme Court ruling that his conviction cannot be suspended. Sanjay Dutt made plea to the Supreme Court to stay his conviction in the Mumbai blast case that rocked the nation in the year 1993.

According to Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan, a conviction for serious offense cannot be stayed to allow the convict to contest the elections.

Legal experts also say that a convict of the serious offense will not be allowed to contest the elections for a few years as per the Representation of the People Act, 1950 (43 of 1950).

It may be recalled that Sanjay Dutt was Samajwadi Party’s candidate for the Lucknow constituency.
