Music composer Justin Prabhakaran talks about Oru Naal Koothu

Oru Naal Koothu (ONK) directed by Nelson Venkatesan has lilting melodies of Justin Prabhakaran. We catch up with the young music composer to find out more:

“To start with, I should say that Nelson Venkatesan has an excellent music sense. He is an avid reader and is well informed too. All the five songs in ONK are very vital and they are not force fitted in the narrative. Nelson had a clear, detailed vision which helped me understand his needs. He wanted the ideas to be fresh and attractive that would help in elevating the film.

Nelson was sure that Gopalakrishna Bharathi’s Eppo Varuvaro would be apt for the film. It was a challenging task for me. We did not want to spoil an immortal tune and the song. Therefore, I had scored a new tune for it. It has worked out well.

I did not score Adiyae Azhagae for this film. Nelson accidentally heard this tune which I had composed for some other film. He was so confident that the tune will be perfect for ONK. Vivek and Sean Roldan have brought alive the song with lovely lyrics and a terrific voice. The tune and lyrics were folksy while background was Western in it.

As regards the BGM, I had to treat the three different stories with three different types of BGM. Nelson had extracted the best from all of us without us realizing. I am very happy to have worked in the film.

Other projects in the pipeline are UL Kuthu and Prasanna, Kalaiarasan’s Kaala Koothu in which I am doing the BGM right now. Raja Mandhiri is already out. I am in talks with a couple of Tamil films. I will finalize soon".

Wish you the best Justin!
