Oru Naal Koothu director Nelson Venkatesan talks about his film

Oru Naal Koothu directed by Nelson Venkatesan is in its post-production phase and is gearing up for a release before this year end. Nelson comes from a radio background and has been a part of the radio industry for the last ten years. He is passionate about films and here he talks about his first film Oru Naal Koothu (ONK).

What is Oru Naal Koothu all about?

It is about the process of wedding. You live in a country that is obsessed with the event of marriage and not concerned about what happens later to the people involved in it. I am not talking about any caste or rituals here, but the social mentality, the general theme, the crowd psychology and approach towards weddings. Marriage is just not about the girl or boy you like, but is about various other things here. It is like one of the series of duties that we perform one after another in our life. This is what I have talked about in my film.

Is your film a serious one?

It is a fun filled film with its share of serious moments because I believe in emotions. Comedy will make you sit through the film, but emotions will make you remember it for a long time. ONK has everything. It might sound clichéd but that is the truth. The film has good music, good story, good performances, good screenplay, good humor and the theme will be fresh and new. I can definitely guarantee that. It is a fun filled film with all the necessary elements.

Cast

I have an amazing cast; thanks to my story, nobody could refuse my film.

I wanted someone with a boy-next-door look and Dinesh fitted perfectly. OMR is filled with techies and out of which a sizeable percentage would be from tier 2 or tier 3 towns. There would be a villager inside these people. After a few years stay in Chennai, they will imbibe the identity of Chennai.  I wanted someone to reflect this personality and Dinesh was perfect.

I wanted a ‘divine’ looking girl who could also perform and Miya came in. I chose her after seeing Amarakaviyam. The script required a girl who could speak Tamil to play the role of Dinesh’s pair and we zeroed in on Nivetha Pethuraj, Miss India UAE. We chose her for two reasons. She acts well and she speaks Tamil well. Karunakaran is a fantastic and a versatile actor and I somehow feel he is not properly utilized. I have given him a different shade in ONK and it has come out well. Besides that ONK has Riythivka, Ramesh Thilak, Bala Saravanan and others.
