Singer Sharanya Gopinath speaks about singing in Uttama Villain and also her other projects

Love’aa Love'aa in Kamal Haasan’s Uttama Villain had a distinct quality about its female voice and the young Sharanya Gopinath who had sung this number has also rapped recently for ‘Naa Romba Busy’ in Arya’s Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga (VSOP).

In an exclusive conversation with behindwoods Sharanya talks about her playback singing in films.

How it all began?

I grew up in Chennai and was singing in school choirs. Later I joined the Madras Musical Association and that’s when I started meeting people and singing a lot more. We started our band 'Chrome O Soul' in 2013. We were participating in many competitions and were winning. In one such instance, Ghibran’s manager Raghavendran heard my singing and called me for Love’aa Love’aa. I have also sung two songs in Jil (Yamaindhi Vela and Pori Masala Pori) and the Telugu version of Love’aa Love’aa.

What was Kamal’s response to your singing in Love’aa Love’aa?

I met him at the audio launch of Uttama Villain. He shook hands and said appreciative words. It was such an awestruck moment for me.

Valiyavan and Kalavu Thozhirchalai

I have sung ‘Eyes on You’, a theme kind of number in Valiyavan before Uttama Villain. It was a different kind of song. Besides, I have sung a number in Kalavu Thozhirchalai. The audio is out but the movie is yet to.

How was it rapping for Imman in VSOP?

I have never rapped and have never listened to rap or that genre of music before I went in for this. I was comfortable with ‘Eyes on You’ and have also sung a very very small portion of Silukku Maramae in Paayum Puli. But they were in English. I am amazed that Imman sir called me to rap for this number. This is my first attempt. Lyricist Snigdha was also there and it was helpful. Imman sir was supportive and encouraging. Thanks to Imman sir, I got to realize that I can even rap.

With a lot going in favor of this young talented singer, here is hoping that we get to hear more of Sharanya in the future. Good luck Sharanya!
