10 FILMS WHICH STOOD OUT IN QUARTER 3

We have stepped into the final quarter of the year and here we take a quick look back at the impactful films in the previous quarter (July to September). The list comprises films which were critically appreciated and also met with creditable success at the box-office.

Arima Nambi - A slick fast-paced urban action thriller which has given Tamil cinema an intelligent young director in the form of Anand Shankar.

Sathuranga Vettai - A realistic and mostly riveting con flick which went on to get rave reviews and good reception from the public.

Velai Illa Pattathari - This year's best full-on commercial flick and rightfully the biggest financial success too. Dhanush's memorable landmark movie.

Jigarthanda - This 'musical gangster story' has gone on to emerge as one of the few genuine cult films in Tamil cinema history. Karthik Subbaraj has truly arrived.

Kathai Thiraikadhai Vasanam Iyakkam - This meta movie marked director Parthiban's comeback and was appreciated for his typically innovative quirks and the screenplay.

Salim - Vijay Antony came without much fuss and succeeded yet again with a movie having dark shades, just like his earlier outing Naan.

Sigaram Thodu - Gaurav's second movie was noted for its gripping 2nd half and continued Vikram Prabhu's success streak as an action hero.

Aranmanai - Sundar C's Midas touch continued with this horror comedy which had its fair share of glamour. Horror comedies are undeniably the in-thing now.

Jeeva - Suseenthiran's guts to take a movie on cricket politics has been much-lauded and Jeeva has the makings of a sleeper hit.

Madras - Arguably, Karthi's most-loved movie in a long time, Madras cements Ranjith's place as a director to watch out for.

The ones which didn't make it to the Final 10, but managed to satisfy a section of the audience include Ramanujan, Sarabham, Amara Kaaviyam, Poriyalan, Burma, Aadama Jaichomada and Aal.

The current quarter (October to December) is packed with the big ticket flicks which people would pay for, irrespective of reviews. Hope all these biggies - Kaththi, Poojai, I, Anegan, Uttama Villain, Lingaa to name a few, make it to the next 'Best Films of the Quarter' analysis.

Here's to many more memorable hours in the cinema hall.
