Aus: Boy arrested for putting needles in strawberries

A young boy in New South Wales, Australia was arrested after police said he admitted to hiding sewing needles in strawberries in the country as a prank in a scandal that has led to fruit contamination fears across the country. The boy would be reportedly dealt under the youth cautioning system.

The penalty for deliberately contaminating a food source in Australia is 10 years in jail, but Australia’s prime minister has said the government plans to increase the maximum jail term to 15 years, cite media reports.

Police are investigating more than 100 reports of needles first found in strawberries produced by one supplier in the northern state of Queensland, but are now turning up around the country.
